Whitewright Fire-Rescue

The Whitewright Fire Department, established in 1888, serves a crucial role in protecting the community and surrounding areas of Southeastern Grayson County. Our history is marked by significant events and evolving firefighting techniques:

Early Days and Major Fires

• Founded in 1888: The department was established in conjunction with the growth of the town, which was founded a decade prior.

• Challenges of the early 20th century: Whitewright faced serious fires in 1904 and 1911 that ravaged the central business district.

• The Great Whitewright Fire of 1911: This devastating fire, possibly started by burning trash, destroyed most of the downtown business district, including the fire station and city hall, along with numerous homes. Inadequate equipment, primarily horse-drawn wagons, necessitated assistance from neighboring fire departments.

• Resilience and Rebuilding: Despite the devastation, the community and the fire department demonstrated resilience, rebuilding after both the 1904 and 1911 fires.

Modern Era

• Ongoing Service: Today, the Whitewright Fire Department

   continues to provide fire and EMS coverage across its 51 square mile service area.

• Community Involvement: The fire department actively engages with the community through events such as the annual Hometown Christmas Parade.
